3240 N Springfield Ave, Chicago, IL 60618
Opening Thursday, February 24th, from 6PM - 9PM
On view through Friday, April 22nd
table is pleased to present Zero Reprieve, Will Lee’s first solo exhibition in Chicago. The various works in the show inhabit different rooms of the apartment gallery. Acedia of Arcadia, Brain Teaser, Wandering Scope, and Medium Red document the texture of digital worlds in forms ranging from ruminations on the ruins of completed games to a necromantic elegy. What new knowledge, insights, or erotics can be learned from playtime? Sentence is an endurance game of condemned life. The player faces death time and time again. Freedom is defined only by its necessity as a game mechanic. Dreamfall is a timepiece depicting a blue flower that sheds infinite petals. Time wears the body. Each revision of humanity requires disassembling, dismemberment.
Will Lee is an artist based in New York. He is interested in videogames as a medium for exploring a zero-degree aesthetics, or the minimal conditions for experience. Games reveal how something can be perfectly intelligible, but utterly meaningless by playing with concepts, actions, and rules. In 2018–2019, he was an artist fellow at Ashkal Alwan, Beirut, Lebanon and is currently in the studio program at Whitney ISP 2021–2022.
