Chicago’s dynamic new center for cultivating the art and culture of South Asia and its diaspora—proudly announces two FREE public events both taking place Saturday, November 6, 2021 to mark the official opening of the multimedia exhibition: Ravi Shankar: Ragamala to Rockstar, A Retrospective of the Maestro’s Life in Music.
Shankar was instrumental in bringing Indian classical music to mainstream audiences in the west. George Harrison of The Beatles dubbed him the “Godfather of world music.” This is the first exhibition to ever showcase Shankar’s groundbreaking career through 100+ rare concert posters and psychedelic art prints created by noted artists of the time, photographs and portraits by famed photographers, videos, record covers and personal artifacts.
Married to the Maestro features exhibition Curators in conversation with Shankar’s wife, Sukanya Shankar, who will candidly discuss her life with the ace sitarist. Sukanya will discuss her efforts to keep Ravi’s legacy alive through the Ravi Shankar Foundation, the Ravi Shankar Archives, the Ravi Shankar Institute of Music and Performing Arts [RIMPA], based in New Delhi, India and the family’s record label East Meets West Music.
