In 1832, Chicago was the site of an innovation that would revolutionize architecture and democratize housing. Timber framing—also known as “Chicago construction”—used softwood to create frames that were simple and inexpensive to construct, meeting the needs of a growing population and economic boom. This quintessentially American architectural method is the subject of the new book American Framing, by editors Jayne Kelley and Paul Preissner. Join them at Chicago Humanities Festival for a conversation about the sociopolitical consequences of timber framing and the impact of Chicago construction on the trajectory of American architecture.
