Trash into Treasure with Bermet Borubaeva
1:30-2pm
The issue of trash in our cities or rural areas is both a local and global problem. With imagination and vision, we can rethink what constitutes trash and what can be reused, rebuilt, remade, and recycled. This hands-on and discussion-based workshop develops new ways to reuse various materials from food to containers, to art materials.
Peeling Layers with Erika Dudley
2-2:30
Legend has it that the name, Chicago, is a French translation of an indigenous word for a wild onion that grew easily along the river. Please join us for a tasting and conversation about those who lived here, DuSable, and the city’s motto, “City in a Garden.”
Empty Bowls at Center Sunday
3-5 pm
Empty Bowls is a grassroots movement started nearly a decade ago by artists and crafts people around the world to care for and feed the hungry in their communities. The Hyde Park Art Center participates for the first time in this global community to bring our ceramic students together to make bowls in our clay studio, donate their craftwork, and invite the public to share and purchase a meal. Student artists interested in participating will attend “throw downs” where they receive free clay to make pots that will be fired and glazed at the Art Center for the Empty Bowls meal and fundraiser. We will collaborate with Gnarware (artist-run ceramic studio in Pilsen) to create more bowls with their clay community with the intention to generate 500 bowls total. The Empty Bowls event at the Art Center will bring awareness to the immediate needs for food security in the South Side and the proceeds will go to local food-related charities, including the Chicago Greater Food Depository.
