Carmen Winant: The Making and Unmaking of the World
@ PATRON
1612 W Chicago Ave Chicago, IL 60622
On view through Saturday, November 27th
Carmen’s exhibition will focus on a new body of work composed primarily of a forest of mobiles suspended from the ceiling. The mobiles – and additional wall collages – will be composed of sourced photography focused on Winant’s exploration of craft and human creation. The images, which predominantly show human hands crafting, holding or making something, line the different sides of the mobiles. As the mobiles are activated, the images alternate from front to back, appearing and disappearing as the mobile moves. There is a predominant white male presence in the hands published in these images, even when the visuals are in reference to traditional crafts from the cultures of people of color. Winant is interested in exploring the hierarchies of making – how craft and artisanal arts are viewed in the overall history of making. Underlying this exploration is the question of who exactly makes the world; who is the teacher and who is the student?
