Betsy Ming-Lai Lam: Reflexivity
@ The Martin
2500 W Chicago Ave, Chicago, IL 60622
Opening Friday, July 9th, from 7PM - 9PM
On view through Sunday, July 25th
Join us for opening night in celebration of Betsy Ming-Lai Lam’s solo exhibition, “Reflexivity”.
“Reflexivity” is a collection of drawings, writings, and animations that investigate an evolving self. How do we navigate loss & discovery, trauma & joy? How does this spectrum of the human experience – and our reflections on it – shape and reshape us over time? How does this recurring migration from pain to solace connect us to our core and to others?
Betsy Ming-Lai Lam is a biracial artist, writer, web developer, rock climber, mother, and former competitive gymnast. Through drawings that feature her character, Lotus Girl, she pulls from experiences with trauma & recovery, motherhood, and a multi-faceted identity to explore a shifting self over space & time. She lives for mayonnaise, ikura, oysters, hot & sour soup, and a good meat plate.
You can enter The Martin directly on Chicago Avenue, or come through Split-Rail at the corner of Campbell & Chicago. Both The Martin + Split-Rail are completely ADA accessible.
Beer + wine will be available to purchase while you shop for any guests who are 21+. At this time, both The Martin & Split-Rail remain fully masked environments, regardless of vaccination status.
Want to enjoy dinner at Split-Rail before or after your gallery visit? We highly recommend making a reservation.
