Art on theMART: Year of Chicago Music Launch Event

Join us on July 6 at 8 p.m. to celebrate ‘The Year of Chicago Music,’ our all-new series in collaboration with Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot! This program honors Chicago-based musicians in alignment with the City of Chicago’s ‘Year of Chicago Music’ celebration.
Live music and dance, followed by remarks from Art on theMART Executive Director Cynthia Noble, DCASE Commissioner Mark Kelly, and artists featured in ‘The Year of Chicago Music’ series will begin at 8 p.m. Projections will begin at 9 p.m., and will be live streamed on the Art on theMART Facebook Page.
‘The Year of Chicago Music Series’ will include:
-“Footnotes” an animated projection focused on Chicago footwork, produced by artists Wills Glasspiegel and Brandon K. Calhoun, featuring original music by DJ Spinn, the Chicago Bucket Boys, Angel Bat Dawid, Elisha Chandler, and Amal Hubert.
-“the light of the dark” a projection created by Chicago-based, Grammy Award-winning ensemble Eighth Blackbird and new media artist and filmmaker Xuan featuring music by renowned composer Michael Gordon.
-“Woven” a series of hand-animated projections created by visual artist Selina Trepp and musician Dan Bitney, collaborating as Spectralina, that interlace music inspired by Chicago’s musical history and images of woven patterns found in the culturally diverse neighborhoods of Chicago.

Then, Art on theMART will be celebrating Frida Kahlo’s birthday by presenting a new piece featuring her work designed by Chicago artist George Berlin. The program is in alignment with the ‘Frida Kahlo: Timeless’ exhibition at the Cleve Carney Museum of Art and the McAninch Arts Center at the College of DuPage.
Art on theMART can best be experienced for free from the jetty section of the Chicago Riverwalk on Wacker Drive between Wells Street and Franklin Street, where accompanying audio is also available. Projections will be on view nightly through September 16, 2021.
