2251 S Michigan Ave. suite 220 Chicago, IL 60618
Opening Saturday, May 1st, from 4:30PM - 7PM
On view through Sunday, June 27th
You are invited to celebrate the opening of the duo show by Erin Mitchell and SHAN Wallace at FLXST Contemporary entitled “wont you celebrate with me,” featuring new paintings, photographs and collages by the artists in the B-Side of the gallery. The opening reception will take place on Saturday, May 1,2021, from 4:30 pm to 7 pm.
The title “wont you celebrate with me“ comes from a popularized poem of the same name by poet, writer and educator Lucille Clifton. The artists imbues the title of the show by signifying Black women and queer experiences through time and space. Erin and SHAN work on the idea of Black futurity in art making, which situates their work both within and outside of the constraints of time and history. The artists together tell a story of imagination and possibility. They enable a future where life is presented as more than an assemblage of experiences through hardship and grief; but of a life worth celebrating for its triumph and love. While the pieces both literally and figuratively transcends gravity and the ordered cosmos, they incubate a future that Black women and femmes create.
The gallery is on the second floor, Suite 220 (to be let in, please select the gallery’s name on the intercom with the green arrow). There are stairs and an elevator that you can use to reach the second floor.
You must book a time slot for the opening reception using the TOCK app or website. Face masks are required at all times in the gallery.
