Reading: Azareen Van der Vliet: Oloomi
@ Renaissance Society
Online
Opening Thursday, October 15th, from 7PM - 8PM
THIS EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE VIRTUALLY; DETAILS COMING SOON.
Azareen Van der Vliet Oloomi’s recent novels follow protagonists whose own life stories are deeply entangled with narratives they have inherited or adopted. Whether obsessively investigating the death of their new house’s former tenant in Fra Keeler (Dorothy, a publishing project, 2012), or negotiating their position in a family lineage dedicated to exhaustively studying the literary canon in Call Me Zebra (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2018), these are stories of individuals grappling in their own ways with questions of personal identity and agency, even as their experiences lead them to new understandings of healing, love, trauma, and even madness.
For this program, Oloomi presents a newly-commissioned piece of writing responding to sympathetic themes and motifs that recur throughout Nine Lives. This creative text will be presented as a virtual lecture on October 15, and in a forthcoming digital publication accompanying the exhibition.
Closed captioning will be available for this program.
