In this delightful coming-of-age comedy, Stranger Things star Natalia Dyer plays Alice, a devout 16-year-old growing up in the Midwest at the beginning of the new millennium. According to her priest and the other pious teens at her Catholic high school, premarital sex (even with yourself) is a sin, and God is always watching. When an AOL chat becomes sexy, Alice discovers masturbation, and is caught between her guilt as well as her newfound desire. Seeking redemption at a four-day religious retreat, Alice tries to escape her urges but finds temptations everywhere she turns. Her sense of shame is spiraling when she uncovers a shocking truth about the retreat’s most devout. Desperate and confused, she flees and meets an unlikely ally who offers an alternative view of what it means to be good. For the first time, Alice realizes she can decide for herself what to believe and finally gets the release she needs.
Mixing laughs and pathos, and led by a revelatory performance from Dyer, Yes, God, Yes is a heartfelt and refreshingly honest exploration of female sexuality.
Directed by Karen Maine, U.S.A., 2019, 78 mins.
