Japanese filmmaker Tetsuya Mariko finds humor amid the bleak. His cinematic voice is embodied through some of his earliest work, autobiographical shorts shot on Super-8 during Mariko’s time as a university student. Following our two-part feature of shorts “The Far East Apartment” and “Mariko’s 30 Pirates,” Mariko and Alexander Zahlten join us for a live conversation.

Tetsuya Mariko completed these early, self-produced and award-winning shorts as a student at Hosei University. His 2016 feature “Destruction Babies” received numerous awards internationally, including at the Locarno Film Festival, the Three Continents Festival, and the Yokohama Film Festival. His latest feature, “Miyamoto,” received awards at the Blue Ribbon awards, the Nikkan Sports Film Awards, and the Takasaki Film Festival.

Zahlten is associate professor of East Asian languages and civilizations at Harvard University, with research centered on film and audiovisual culture in East Asia, with a focus on Japan. His monograph “The End of Japanese Cinema: Industrial Genres, National Times, and Media Ecologies” maps developments in film and media culture in Japan from the 1960s–2000s as a whole through the genres of pink film, Kadokawa film, and V-Cinema.

SHORTS FROM UNDERGROUND
Presented in partnership with Chicago-based organization Full Spectrum Features, Shorts from Underground highlights boundary-pushing filmmakers from around the world. Each Monday, gain week-long access to a short film by a new featured artist, accompanied by an exclusive interview with the filmmaker.

Shorts from Underground aims to replicate the joy and connective experience of going to the movies, all without leaving the house. The screenings also seek to celebrate original voices in film and amplify the work of women, POC, LGBTQ+, and other marginalized filmmakers.
