Short Docs on Cuban Music

Opening Friday, November 22nd, from 7PM - 9PM
“The Other Guantanamo”” follows the HotHouse Chicago-Guantánamo Blues Exchange to Guantánamo Province, where Chicago musicians and Cuban musicians share techniques, stylings and experiences and, above all, their love of music. Through these events, a story emerges about a place and its little-known musical traditions. Particular to the region and showcased in The Other Guantánamo is Changüí, an Afro- Cuban “roots” music that originated in the early 19th-century sugar cane refineries and rural mountain slave communities. This program partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency
“Vida Buena” features Los Matanzeros, an extended family band in Matanzas that performs Cuban musical folklore, bringing a 300-year-old tradition to life. Shot on 16mm, this portrait of a community is a human mixtape, piecing together interviews, public and private performance against a symphonic urban backdrop.
