Notes on Territory is a dance lecture and reading room exploring containment architectures and freedom, designed, choreographed, and directed by Anna Martine Whitehead. In consideration of the 2019 Chicago Architecture Biennial’s theme …And Other Such Stories, an interactive installation opening November 15, 2019 at SITE/less is followed by the Chicago premiere of Notes on Territory November 22-24, 2019 at the Green Line Performing Arts Center.

Notes on Territory is designed, choreographed and directed by Anna Martine Whitehead, in collaboration with Damon Locks, Giau Truong, and Trinity Bobo. Through lecture, dance, and a reading room, Territory is a space for probing the dual inquiries: What is the prison and Where are its holes? Beginning with the crucifix, the project investigates the implications of various architectural forms and typologies as they have been leveraged for dominance over others. Interweaving political histories, social geographies, and embodied research, Territory takes audiences for a ride through speculative histories with powerful resonances for our future.

Alongside the performance is an installation, Notes on Territory: Meditation 1—another access point for audiences to consider the role of designed space and how we experience freedom. Based on the attic Harriet Jacobs’ lived in for 7 years on her journey from slavery to freedom, this crawl space opens onto a resource library for visitors wishing to study the intersections of architecture, design, social control, slavery, prisons, and freedom movements.

Notes on Territory was named a Creative Capital ‘On Our Radar’ project for 2019, and has been developed with generous support from Chicago Dancemakers Forum, Pivot Arts, Ruth Page Center for the Arts, the University of Michigan Daring Dances Residency Program, Velocity Dance Center, Whitman College, the Headlands Center for the Arts, and the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. Notes on Territory will tour through 2021.
