Jeffrey Gibson (BFA 1995) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Claverack, New York. His artwork references various aesthetic and material histories rooted in Indigenous cultures of the Americas, and in modern and contemporary subcultures. Working in media ranging from painting to performance, Gibson’s use of both traditional Indigenous and contemporary materials translates into a unique visual language, such as a beaded punching bag and painted animal hide. Gibson explores the aesthetics of cultures in relation to his personal identity, cultural experiences, and meditations on history.
