n conjunction with the exhibition Looking at You From a Distance Not Too Far: Work by Marvin Tate (on view August 15–October 27, 2019), Intuit is proud to welcome Chicago-based artist Marvin Tate for an art workshop. Tate will help you tell your own story through collage and assemblage. Enjoy a hands-on session in an informal creative setting with an interactive dialogue around narrative storytelling using repurposed materials and mixed media techniques.
You will begin with an artist-led exhibition walkthrough in which Tate will discuss his interest in storytelling, personal narrative, and political commentary as exemplified in the works on view. Then you will step into the workspace to create your narrative-based assemblage piece!
Bring your own frame to embellish–backing should be included with the frame. You are strongly encouraged to bring a selection of personal storytelling materials—letters, photos, jewelry, fabric remnants, beads, small toys, trinkets or any other small items you would like to incorporate into your narrative art frame. Intuit will have an assortment of collage and assemblage materials available for use in the workshop, as well as various adhesives and paints.

ABOUT MARVIN TATE
Marvin Tate is a performance poet, lyricist, published author, collected visual artist and educator. He is known for his biographical art in the form of assemblage, portraits and landscapes composed of found objects and fragments from everyday life. Finding beauty and subtlety in everyday life, objects and people is inherent in Tate’s narrative, which speaks of personal and family history while addressing a broader collective memory through social and political commentary.
