“Inner Compulsion” is a series of embroidery drawings, which are fictitious personal narratives. It is an attempt to understand one’s multiple identities and their body in places through daily sewing and stitching. It is an exploration of the bodies who are dealing with the moments of disorientation and disruption.

Elnaz Javani is an Iranian artist, researcher and educator. Her practice pushes the boundaries of embroidery into sculpture, installation and time-based mediums without straying far from the essence of stitching as an intimate, meditative process and often originating from her drawings. It is an exploration of memory, body and the scars left by cultural uprooting, an attempt to understand a place of uncertainty. Javani holds an MFA with a full merit scholarship from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from the Tehran Art University of Iran. Javani was awarded the Define American Fellowship (2019) and Kala Art Institute Fellowship (2019), She is currently a Resident Artist at Hyde Park Art Center. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in the USA, Spain, Iran, France, Colombia, Turkey, UAE, Germany and Switzerland.
