Join us for a sound performance by Brett Naucke with Natalie Chami and Whitney Johnson at 7 PM, and a screening after dark of the short experimental films As Without So Within (2016) by Manuela De Laborde and Xenoi (2016) by Deborah Stratman.

Brett William Naucke is an American electronic composer, recording, and performing artist based in Chicago, IL. Naucke’s sonic output has been primarily focused on marrying an ever-evolving practice of synthesis with personal and conceptual narratives. His most recent recordings have been released by Spectrum Spools, Umor Rex, and Hausu Mountain in addition to many others since 2009. Beyond live performance, Naucke has provided the original scores for several films, sound design for interactive gaming, and presented many works for multi-channel audio installations. Additionally, Naucke also ran the Catholic Tapes record label from 2007-2015 releasing over 100 documents of American underground electronic music. For more information, visit bnaucke.com.

Manuela De Laborde’s work carries aesthetic claims of pleasure, yet its purpose is deeply conceptual. Based in Mexico City, and currently a resident for the triennial program Conditional Cinema at Oberhausen Film Festival (2018-2020), the artist’s work evolves around a search to locate and isolate the concepts that are constructed around tangible elements. By stripping elements, Laborde regenerates the image and positions it in newly formed, virtual spaces. Laborde started -ito/-ita, a children’s art program working around the subject of abstraction. For -ito/-ita contemporary artists to share their practice, and donate conceptual discoveries and material leftovers to promote a notion of creativity as public domain. Deborah Stratman is an artist and filmmaker interested in landscapes and systems. Much of her work points to the relationships between physical environments and human struggles for power and control that play out on the land. Recent projects have addressed freedom, expansionism, surveillance, sonic warfare, public speech, ghosts, sinkholes, levitation, propagation, orthoptera, raptors, comets, exodus and faith. She has exhibited internationally, and is the recipient of Fulbright, Guggenheim and USA Collins Fellowships, an Alpert Award, Sundance Art of Nonfiction Award and grants from Creative Capital, Graham Foundation, and Wexner Center for the Arts. She lives in Chicago where she teaches at the University of Illinois. For more information, visit pythagorasfilm.com.
