It Be Like That Sometimes
@ Hyde Park Art Center
5020 S Cornell Ave, Chicago, IL 60615
Opening Saturday, June 8th, from 1PM - 3PM
Come and see the culminating works by teen artists at the Hyde Park Art Center. Refreshments from 1-3p and a teen panel discussing the works from 2-2: 30 pm.
It Be Like That Sometimes showcases new paintings, drawings, photography, prints, and multimedia works that demonstrate the intense study by young adult artists participating in Hyde Park Art Center’s Teen programs. Complex topics such as gentrification, justice, healing, and meditation were discussed during the course of the teen programs. The phrase “it be like that sometimes” has existed as a slang expression about the various trials of the human experience, and embraced by teens as they deal with the unknown. Artworks included convey themes that students have been grappling with, some of which have been resolved and some which have not.
Teen Programs are run by the Art Center’s Teen Programs Manager, Alex Herrera. The exhibition is curated with the assistance of Julia Koreman, 2018-2019 Exhibitions Assistant. Artist mentors include Cecil McDonald Jr, Rhonda Wheatley, Justin Nalley, Jasmine Barber, Jackie Moore, Tony Smith, and Jerry “Spree” Kelly.
Alumni mentors include Lamiah Gholar, Noah Polk, Tyler Kai, Jacqueline Wilson, and Ariel Guerra.
Support for the exhibition is also provided by the support of the Education Advocates: Tim Brown & Jill Riddell, Stephanie Comer & Rob Craigie, Peggy Casey Friedman & Martin Friedman, Brooke Hummer & Grove Mower, Jill & Michael Lowe, Lauren Moltz & John Clement, Kate Morrison, Kathleen & Robert Sullivan, Linda Erf Swift, and Melissa Weber & Jay Dandy.
