Artist Statement:
I’m Jamie. I’m not a traditional artist. I learned to crochet in college where I needed stress relief while studying for classes with names like “Organic Chemistry” and “Vertebrate Structure and Function.” After getting my Master’s in Environmental Biology, I went to work for an environmental non-profit where I learned more about the effects of trash on our environment. Currently, more than 15 million tons of textile waste ends up in landfills in the US every year and the amount has doubled over the last 20 years. I originally thought of deconstructing old sweaters as a way to bring new life to old garments.
While I was contemplating this idea, my uncle passed away. I took one of his old sweaters and turned it into small stuffed animals for his grandkids. I thought this would be a nice way for them to have a reminder of their grandfather. It made me think about how using old, worn out sweaters gives them a second life, saving them from the landfill and letting them be reborn into something brand new.
