How can art and activism feed into one another? Artists Andrea Bowers and Emory Douglas have each navigated these connections in their careers. Douglas served as the minister of culture for the Black Panther Party and has created many of the most iconic images representing the struggle for racial equality in the 1960s and 1970s. Deeply influenced by Douglas, Bowers has consistently highlighted migrant workers’ rights, immigration, gun violence, and environmental activism throughout her body of work. As part of the programming for the exhibition West by Midwest, join Douglas and Bowers as they discuss how art aligns with one’s life as an activist and the ways that they each balance these separate yet connected practices.
