Parties have historically functioned as a subversive time and space, thus reclaiming public spaces where people of color, queers, femme identifying people, and people with mental and physical disabilities can become visible and have voices. The invitation is to think of strategies for resistance, bringing together diversities, hospitality, and the interplay between kitsch/pop and the sublime in the representations of marginalized people. Some clues are disco parties of the 80s and 90s, raves, drag performances, elevation of the bodies with disabilities in processions and parties, roles of shamans in village festivities, glamorous bodies, witches and their festivities, fortune tellers at festive occasions, and the list goes on. Let’s also remember that some of the roles played by these people included saving the nation!

Before I get the wrong idea and go

You’re gonna miss the freak that I control*

The Sullivan Center sits on a huge block; a 943,944-square-foot beast, rising 15 stories high. How do we communicate and exist within its walls? The AIADO MFA students, a small cohort residing eleven floors above the majority cohort on level 3, exist in relatively anonymity. Ghostly in their presence. 14th Floor is a Myth exhibits works from this group whose otherwise hidden studios are brought to visibility at the entrance of the 3rd floor in an attempt to start a dialogue between two spaces.
