These artists were granted dollars as well as space to rehearse and developing new work. Join us to see sneak peaks of what Chicago’s performers will be offering us next!

Through our Co-MISSION program Links Hall offers Intensives, Residencies, and Fellowships that support 14-16 artistic projects annually. These programs incorporate a flexible range of resources, designed to meet the needs of artistic experimentation at different points in an artist’s career, and different points in a project’s development. This works-in-progress series features artists from all three programs on shared bills.

Holly Chernobyl | BODYCRAFT:every.word.for.cold

BODYCRAFT theorizes a future world in which labor has been automated. Humans now live in a government subsidized and surveilled world. All activity revolves around consumption of products. BODYCRAFT engages in a series of interventions in the name of radical resistance. BODYCRAFT calls for anonymizing, androgenizing, and maximizing the body using surgical, chemical, and physical retraining interventions.

Elise Cowin | Iteration 1

Choreography: Elise Cowin in collaboration with Hannah Geil-Neufeld, Maddie Kodat, David Himelman, Valentina Manzoni, Michelangelo qui Mutat Fatum, Zach Nicol, Jessica Ray and Cherrie Yu

This performance emerges from a constellation of data: the numbers that describe our bodies, histories, spaces, schedules, bank accounts, productivity and how they relate to the value assigned to us by outside forces. Certain pernicious economies measure a person’s worth by approximating their body’s potential – How old are you? How many hours can you spend? How many pounds can you lift? How much/how long/how hard can you work? Our body thus becomes a unit of measurement. But what information spills out of the measuring cup or topples off the scale? What data is too strange, poetic, personal, tiny or massive to be representable?

Iteration 1 moves between straightforward and impossible attempts at measuring. It experiments with fantastical mapping that is less about representing and more about trying to conceive, imitate and interrogate conservative logics of assigning value. Dancing bodies and shifting choreographic structures resist being measured and defined. Instead, we use a softer, more open logic guided by possibility, not productivity.

Chrissy Martin | Body Puzzles

BODY PUZZLES, an excerpt by Chrissy Martin in collaboration with Amanda Marasit and Catherine Miller, is a trio in progress. The dancers tumble, fall, spiral, and lift each other in a series of cyclical patterns, accompanied by a live and recorded vocal sound score. BODY PUZZLES is about group process and the relationships dancers build together during rehearsal. This is part of a larger work by Chrissy, Sound Moves, which explores the relationship between movement and sound, voice and body.
