Opening Saturday, August 4th, from 1PM - 4PM
Our Voices, Our Selves: a Writing/Performance Workshop for Women Living with Mental Illness
Conducted by Judith Harding, this workshop provides a safe and supportive setting for us to craft our stories, memories and dreams through writing, as well as exploring ensemble performance to reassure ourselves that we are not alone, and that our voices really truly matter.
All women (cis and trans) ages fifteen and up who live with mental illness — however you wish to define that: whether your experience is personal or as a provider, friend, relative, or caregiver — are more than welcome to participate.
Feel free to bring a poem or song, image or object that is meaningful to you; or just bring you. Paper, pencils and pens will be provided for anyone who needs them.
Judith Harding is a Chicago-based writer / performer whose credits include Sesame St and Blue Man Group. Her solo show about living with mental illness, You Are Here, achieved critical acclaim and toured regionally for several years. She’s conducted storytelling workshops for patients and staff at psychiatric hospitals in the tristate area, was a guest artist with Thresholds Theatre Arts Project, and has profoundly appreciated the opportunity to teach Theatre, Voice and Movement at social service agencies throughout Chicago since 2000.
Read/Write Library collects, preserves, and provides access to local community media, striving to raise the visibility of work produced by Chicagoans of all backgrounds in order to reveal connections across neighborhoods, generations, and cultures and to encourage inquiry into and ownership of the historical record. Through our public programs and free browsing hours, growing collection of over 6,000 publications, and open source catalog, we recognize the contributions that all community members make to co-creating a city and believe that learning to value them plays a vital role in building empathy, community pride, and the ability to see oneself as a change agent.
$10 suggested donation, or pay what you can. No one will be turned away for lack of funds, no questions asked.
Childcare will be provided at this event, please email info@readwritelibrary.org with the age and any needs/accommodations for your child if you are planning to attend and need childcare.
