Winner of the Academy Award for best foreign-language film and the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or, Marcel Camus’ Black Orpheus retells the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice to twentieth-century favelas of Rio de Janeiro during Carnival. Renown for its colorful and dynamic cinematography, costuming and soundtrack, Black Orpheus was an international cultural hit, along with introducing bossa nova music to America, with its soundtrack composed by young Brazilian composers Luiz Bonfá and Antonio Carlos Jobim.
