Bus Tour: Charles White and African American Visual Legacies

oin our June 16th day tour, which begins at the Art Institute of Chicago, to explore the major retrospective of painter, muralist and print maker Charles White. White’s powerful images depicted his interpretation of African American history, culture and lives throughout his 40 year career. White and his wife, the equally talented sculptor Elizabeth Cattlett, lived in New York, Mexico and southern California, finding communities where they could express their belief in the need for social change. After viewing other African American artists with Chicago connections at the museum we will depart for lunch at Davanti Enoteca in Little Italy. After lunch, we’ll visit artist David Anthony Geary in his studio and discuss his paintings, photographs, prints and assemblages referencing his African American and New Orleans based heritage.
Our tour ends at the spectacular South Loop home of advertising legend and author of “Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority”, Thomas Burrell and his wife Madeleine. Their stunning art collection features prominent African American artists including Charles White, Romare Beardon, Norman Lewis, Jacob Lawrence, Charles Alston, Ed Clark, Sam Gilliam, and Alvin Loving.

9:30 AM North Suburban pick-up at Edens Plaza, Wilmette (west side of north parking lot)
10:15 AM Chicago pick-up, Ogilvie Center, Madison and Clinton
Return:
4:00 PM Chicago drop-off
5:00 PM Wilmette drop-off
Fee: $65 including lunch
