gallery no one is excited to present a collaboration, Gaze in Silence, between Ye Xuanlin and Sun Yi.

Painting and poetry are art forms without sound. When looking at a painting or reading a poem, you are in silence and do not use your literal voice to communicate with it. But in most cases, we are always talking to ourselves. We ask ourselves about the meaning of a painting or a poem, or we remind ourselves of a past that related to it. This is for the reason that silence brings language itself into view.

Plutarch once said, “Painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting that speaks,” which is an ancient definition of the relationship between painting and poetry. Meanwhile, Simonides described painting as the making mute of poetry and the silencing of the word. This is not simply because in painting poetry ceases to speak, but because in painting the word and its silence are visible.

Putting together a painting and a poetry, the dialogue between them are unfold in silence. It may occur spontaneously; meanwhile, it may also be aroused by the viewer. But no matter how the dialogue is started, the silence around them should not be ignored. This silence is not speaking out with no words. It is actually a review of yourself and an observation of other things.
