Celebrate the opening reception of “Out of Easy Reach” at Gallery 400 with food, drink, and DJ Ariel Zetina on April 27 from 5-8pm!
Gallery 400 in collaboration with DePaul Art Museum, and Rebuild Foundation present Out of Easy Reach guest curated by Allison Glenn.
Countering conventional accounts of art history, which have often overlooked the artistic contributions of women of color, Out of Easy Reach presents 24 artists from the Black and Latina diasporas through artworks created from 1980 to 2018. The exhibition features myriad ways that three generations of artists use abstraction as a tool to explore both personal and universal histories, with an emphasis on mapping, migration, archives, landscape, vernacular culture, language, and the body.
Gallery 400 will include artworks concerned with spatial politics, mapping, and migration from Lisa Alvarado, Torkwase Dyson, Leslie Hewitt, Juliana Huxtable, Yvette Mayorga, Howardena Pindell, Martine Syms, and Zipporah Camille Thompson.
At DePaul Art Museum, artworks from Candida Alvarez, Bethany Collins, Abigail DeVille, Maren Hassinger, Ariel Jackson, Steffani Jemison, Jennie C. Jones, Caroline Kent, Ayanah Moor, Kellie Romany, Xaviera Simmons, Edra Soto, and Brenna Youngblood will consider landscape, the body, and the archive.
Stony Island Arts Bank will feature works that consider process, time, and material culture from Barbara Chase-Riboud, Sheree Hovsepian, and Shinique Smith.
Out of Easy Reach will be accompanied by a catalogue, and the exhibition will travel to Grunwald Gallery at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana where it will run from Aug. 24 to Oct. 4, 2018.
“Out of Easy Reach” at DePaul Art Museum opens Thursday, April 26 and opens at the Rebuild Foundation’s Stony Island Arts Bank on Saturday, April 28.
