Black Artists Retreat: Reflections on Convening
@ BING Art Books
307 E Garfield Blvd, Chicago, IL 60637
Opening Monday, April 9th, from 6PM - 9PM
Black Artists Retreat: Reflections on Convening is a collection of interviews and short essays that reflect on the creation of platforms in the absence of one. Theaster Gates details the early beginnings of the Black Artists Retreat and why after five years it’s time to reflect. Interviewed by Devin Mays, artists and scholars, Bethany Collins, Immy Mali, Daniel Lind Ramos, and Gates discuss memory, history, identity and the importance creating Black spaces.
In celebration of Gates’s new book, there will be a reception at BING Art Books. Gates will be in conversation with artist Andrea Chung discussing the practice of retreating and creating collectivity.
Light fare and refreshments will be served.
