ABOUT THE SHOW:
Intuitive Hemispheres is a show that explores the work of two radically different artists whose work visually deals with the representation of subjective psychological and emotional states in dramatically different ways. Both artists by turning deeply inward, plumbing the subconscious and becoming radically in tune with their own emotions, present the viewer with at times lucid, terrifying, and deeply moving representations of the feelings that we all share in two dramatically different visual ways.
Kelly Reaves’ work is the culmination of one year of spontaneous mark-making in response to feelings of dread brought on by our precarious political and social climate. Drawing, in this case, is a meditative and therapeutic exercise — a way of looking inward for peace. The physical manifestation of this ritualistic process intends to appeal to our most basic human emotions through lurid visual cues and a visceral manipulation of materials.
Ellen Holtzblatt’s work explores connections between the body and the soul through representations of landscapes, birds, and portraits. With her landscape paintings, Holtzblatt considers place and how one’s surroundings impact emotions and thoughts. Images of birds fill an archetypal role as “angels, messengers, guides, and harbingers of life and death…that embody human’s deepest aspirations and fears.”
