Design for Good
@ ACME Hotel Company
15 E Ohio St, Chicago, IL 60611
Opening Wednesday, February 7th, from 8:30PM - 9:30PM
The Design for Good Breakfast Club series is a casual monthly get together over coffee to connect designers who are interested in using design for good, to meet one another, and highlight the needs of social initiatives. Our goal is to support local, social initiatives and connect them with designers who are interested in helping them grow.
February’s guests are the The Weaving Mill and Chicago Dance Institute.
The Weaving Mill is the collaborative studio of Matti Sloman and Emily Winter. We make projects of our own, textile and otherwise, that respond to the practice of running a small industrial mill. We design and make fabric in collaboration with other artists and designers. Working with people of diverse textile experience, we aim to fill the space between the hand and industrially made and bring the mechanics of textile production into wider view. We also partner with Envision Unlimited and provide textile education workshops adults with developmental disabilities.
Matti Sloman is trained in painting and textile design. Matti (b. 1985) received her MFA in Textiles and a BFA in Painting from Rhode Island School of Design. Emily Winter is trained in history and textile design. Emily (b. 1987) received her MFA in Textiles from Rhode Island School of Design and a BA in History from University of Chicago.
Chicago Dance Institute is an arts education organization that uses dances and music and vehicles to promote social-emotional development in Chicago’s youth. Through in-school partnerships, residencies, and public performances, we operate as a catalyst to engage children and motivate them towards excellence. To date, Chicago Dance Institute has touched the lives of over 5,000 students by providing a high quality arts education program as part of their curriculum.
Nicole Kawell is the Founding Director of Chicago Dance Institute. Born and raised in Chicago, Nicole began her training in tap, ballet, and jazz at age four. She has performed in numerous concerts and productions, and choreographed professionally. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration in 2005 from Dominican University. Nicole served as a Marketing Coordinator and later Marketing Director for Northwestern Mutual until leaving in 2008 to found Chicago Dance Institute.
