Join us at Weinberg/Newton Gallery for an afternoon of collaborative queer history-making! The art and design collective AK/OK will present on the project at 1PM. Drop in anytime from 1-4PM to contribute your own drawn and written memories of the first queer person in your life to A People’s Museum of LGBTQ History! The first 40 participants will receive a custom hand-silkscreened t-shirt and all will be credited as artists in the project. This is the project’s first appearance in Chicago. AK/OK is conducting these workshops all across the US and internationally. Participants of all ages are welcome!
A People’s Museum of LGBTQ History is a socially engaged project by the art and design collective AK/OK (Kate Jarboe and M. Wright) in collaboration with the public. As a grassroots archive created by hundreds of people of various ages, hometowns, and backgrounds, it is a witness to the ways that lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer people are present in all of our lives.
The project asks you to remember: Who was the first LGBTQ person you knew in your life? It is an act of collective memory. It is a renunciation of erasure and forgetting. It is hundreds of faces and stories — of aunts, uncles, cousins, parents, children, friends, classmates, teachers, public figures, strangers, and selves. It is a public gathering of private realities, which relate a multiplicity of memories.
AK/OK’s work has been presented at the Archives, Libraries, Museums, and Special Collections conference (London), Open Engagement, Brown University and the Rhode Island School for Design; and has been exhibited at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (New York), Fernwey Gallery (Chicago), and SOMA (Mexico City). Their artist’s books are distributed by Printed Matter in New York.
