Presented in partnership with the Native American Support Program, “Rising Voices/Hótȟaŋiŋpi” tells the history that forced the Lakota language to near extinction, while presenting a portrait of a contemporary Native culture. The film provides an unflinching look at the language loss and a probing analysis of the revitalization efforts that have brought hope to the Lakota Nation. This screening is presented in conjunction with with the exhibition “Traddutore, Traditore”, on view at Gallery 400 November 3 – December 16, 2017 and in recognition of Native American History month.

Featuring a dedicated and diverse group of people, including members of the Lakota Nation and linguists from The Language Conservancy, the film highlights their united efforts to save and restore the Native language it to its rightful place in Lakota — and American — culture. Told through the voices of a wide range of Lakota people, the documentary also incorporates four short films created for Rising Voices by Lakota filmmakers and artists, each one giving a perspective on how finding one’s authentic language connects a person to a deeper sense of culture.
The Native American Support Program (NASP) (UIC Native American Support Program -NASP) provides opportunities to enhance Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islanders and Indigenous students’ growth and development, academic achievement, and leadership building. Indigenous teachings that emphasize the holistic philosophy are incorporated into student development to guide and instill the principles of responsibility to themselves, their education and community.
