Jackie Tileston: Handbook for Unknowing

@ Zg Gallery

300 W Superior St, Chicago, IL 60654

Opening Friday, November 3rd, from 5:30PM - 8PM

On view through Saturday, December 30th

Zg Gallery is pleased to present Jackie Tileston’s sixth solo show, “Handbook for Unknowing”. Tileston’s paintings engage with an ongoing effort to create hybrid, complex, and contemplative spaces, to materialize how the ephemeral is pouring through and immanent within the physical world in all kinds of magnificent, exuberant, grotesque, raucous, and baroquely differentiated forms. Things are continuously arising, becoming embodied, dissolving. Being raised as a Third Culture Kid in five countries generated a sense of belonging everywhere and belonging nowhere. These new works embody a long term devotion to yoga and meditation, as well as questions about how these ideas can be manifested visually, and the social and political implications of that. In this exhibition, painting directly on the gallery walls becomes a backdrop for the canvases, creating a more immersive experience for the viewer.

“Tantra holds difference and multiplicity, and oneness or nonduality in the same thought, in the same body. It rejects nothing, exempts nothing, and ultimately resolves nothing in favor of a general cosmology and ontology of pervasive and undecidable relation, one that delights in it’s own paradoxes.” (from “Avatar Bodies: A Tantra for Posthumanism” by Ann Weinstone / Shambhavi Saraswati)

Jackie Tileston received her B.F.A. from Yale University, New Haven, CT and her M.F.A. from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. This past spring, she was granted a 2017 Joan Mitchell Foundation, Artist in Residency in New Orleans, LA. Tileston has also received a Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Residency, a Guggenheim Fellowship, The Pew Fellowships in the Arts Grant, and the Core Fellowship Residency, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. She has exhibited throughout the US including Contemporary Art Museum Houston, TX, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX, and The Delaware Contemporary, Wilmington, DE. Her work is in the collections of Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Dallas Museum of Art, West Virginia University Art Museum, Art Museum of Southeast Texas and JP Morgan Chase.
