SAT 04 NOV | Noon-11pm + 2pm panel on 90’s Queerpunk + closing party!
In the 1990’s a group called Homocore Chicago created a regular night that brought queer punks and their friends together in spaces like Czar Bar, The Fireside Bowl and The Empty Bottle to meet, have fun, and listen to a wide variety of live punk music. In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the first Homocore Chicago event, Defibrillator Gallery is presenting a one weekend retrospective exhibition including performances, videos and artifacts from the 90’s queer and punk scenes in Chicago. Artifacts displayed throughout the weekend include posters, newsletters, T Shirts, archival videos, photography and artwork.
The Thursday night opening party features a performance by Thalia Zedek, who played Homocore at the Empty Bottle in the early 90’s with Come. Friday night features a set by Homolatte’s Scott Free with Jenny Urban. Scott played numerous Homocore shows through the 90s with this band The Scott Free Trio.
A panel discussing 90’s queer and punk scenes in the Midwest will take place Saturday Afternoon at 2pm and will include trans activist Ed Varga of Homocore Minneapolis, Martin Sorrondeguy of Los Crudos and Limp Wrist, Jane Danger of Three Dollar Bill, photographer, gallery director and early Homocore volunteer Chris Kellner, and Joanna Brown and Mark Freitas, founders of Homocore Chicago. The panel will be moderated by Liam Warfield, who is completing book that is a companion the movie Queercore: How to Punk a Revolution.
November 13th 1992 was the inaugural Homocore Chicago event featuring Toronto’s Fifth Column with film director, zinester and illustrator G.B. Jones, a founder of the queer punk scene. Homocore’s last show on May 20th, 2000 included a G.B. Jones film retrospective and the first Chicago performance of Le Tigre. Over the years, Homocore Chicago presented many artists including: Vaginal Davis, Tribe 8, Bikini Kill, Come, Pansy Division, Los Crudos, Team Dresch, Sleater Kinney, Shellac, Trenchmouth (with a young Fred Armisen), The Prophets of Rage (with a young Dan Sinker), Scott Free Trio, God is My Co-Pilot, The Flying Luttenbachers, Excuse 17, Lois, Glen Meadmore, MDC, Behead the Prophet No Lord Shall Live, 3rd Sex, Scissor Girls, Harum Scarum, The Butchies and The Need.
