Please join us for a panel discussion on the poetry of structural design on the occasion of SOM: Engineering x [Art + Architecture], an exhibition produced by Mana Contemporary Chicago in partnership with the Chicago Architecture Biennial. The panel is presented in partnership with Ace Hotel Chicago.
This panel will examine the thesis of the exhibitionâStructure as Poetryâby exploring the unique poeticism of structural design for architecture and the creative arts. Using the essay âStructure as Poetryâ from the recent volume DETAIL Engineering 4 as a launching point, the panel will discuss the poetry of structural architecture and the intersection of engineering, architecture, design, and history.
The panel will be moderated by Maria Garlock, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Princeton University. Panelists include architect Vincent Chang, Grimshaw; artist James Carpenter; historian Nicholas Adams, Professor of Art at Vassar College; architect Scott Duncan, SOM; and structural engineers Mark Sarkisian and William F. Baker, SOM.
