Structure as Poetry
@ Ace Hotel Chicago
311 N Morgan St, Chicago, IL 60607
Opening Thursday, October 12th, from 7PM - 9PM
Please join us for a panel discussion on the poetry of structural design on the occasion of SOM: Engineering x [Art + Architecture], an exhibition produced by Mana Contemporary Chicago in partnership with the Chicago Architecture Biennial. The panel is presented in partnership with Ace Hotel Chicago.
This panel will examine the thesis of the exhibition—Structure as Poetry—by exploring the unique poeticism of structural design for architecture and the creative arts. Using the essay “Structure as Poetry†from the recent volume DETAIL Engineering 4 as a launching point, the panel will discuss the poetry of structural architecture and the intersection of engineering, architecture, design, and history.
The panel will be moderated by Maria Garlock, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Princeton University. Panelists include architect Vincent Chang, Grimshaw; artist James Carpenter; historian Nicholas Adams, Professor of Art at Vassar College; architect Scott Duncan, SOM; and structural engineers Mark Sarkisian and William F. Baker, SOM.
