Join us at LATITUDE for a happy hour and a conversation between our October artist in residence Noritaka Minami and the Chicago-based artist Hui-min Tsen. They will discuss their recent projects that deal with the built environment and how history, politics, and utopianism are explored to their examinations of spaces.
Noritaka Mianmi
Noritaka Minami is a visual artist based in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a BA in Art Practice and graduated from the University of California, Irvine with a MFA in Studio Art. Minami is currently an Assistant Professor of Photography at Loyola University Chicago. He has also taught courses at Harvard University, Wellesley College, the School of the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, University of California, Berkeley, and University of California, Irvine. He is a recipient of grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, and the Durfee Foundation. In 2015, he published a monograph titled “1972 – Nakagin Capsule Tower” (Kehrer Verlag), which received the 2015 Architectural Book Award from the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt, Germany. Minami’s works are held in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, UCLA Architecture and Urban Design, and Museum of Contemporary Photography Chicago. His forthcoming solo exhibition will open at Kana Kawanishi Gallery in Tokyo, Japan in April 2018.
Hui-min Tsen
Hui-min Tsen’s work explores the act of exploration itself with an emphasis on the individual’s everyday relationship with place, wonder, and the unknown. Through a series of projects ranging from boat-building to walking tours, she has sought to cross the distance between here and over there by reaching for the myth and mystery present in our everyday landscape. She received a BFA from Tisch School of the Arts, and an MFA in photography from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is an active member of the Chicago arts community, showing and publishing with Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago Artists Coalition, MDW Fair, and Sector 2337, among others. Jason Foumberg placed her project “On the Trail of a Disorderly Future; A Chicago Pedway Tour” on his top ten list of public art in NewCity and the accompanying guidebook was published by Green Lantern Press in 2013. She currently teaches photography at Wright College and Loyola University.
