Presented in tandem with the Museum of Contemporary Art’s exhibition, Takashi Murakami: The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg, the Chicago Athletic Association hotel unveils a unique installation inspired by one of Takashi Murakami’s original characters.

To celebrate the unveiling of eponymous octopus of The Octopus Eats Its Own Leg on the hotel’s first floor, the Chicago Athletic Association hotel opens its doors for revelers to toast to Takashi in The Tank for an evening soiree. Complimentary to attend, the evening invites guests to mix and mingle atop the custom installation that was inspired by Takashi Murakami’s MCA exhibition, and enjoy custom cocktails for purchase from Land and Sea Dept. Beverage Director, Paul McGee and Cindy’s Spirit Guide, Nandini Khaund. Alongside Chicago Athletic Association hotel Chef Josh Miyake, Cindy’s Executive Pastry Chef and Chef de Cuisine Keith Potter will also prepare art-inspired delights available for purchase (*cash only).

This event is complimentary with RSVP and open to the public. RSVP does not guarantee entry if event capacity is reached.

We will be playing “Jellyfish Eyes,” a film written and directed by the artist, throughout the evening.

Through Monday, July 31, Murakami’s giant pink octopus icon is poised to take over The Tank floor, the former Chicago Athletic Association swimming pool space located on the hotel’s first floor. Created by Murakami exclusively for his Chicago show, this character is demonstrative of his signature “Superflat” concept which pairs traditional Japanese painting techniques with a contemporary, animé-inspired aesthetic within a flattened picture plane.

Nestled inside the playful trophy cases inset into the property’s original German Millwork in the Drawing Room, iconic toys from Murakami’s commercial catalog will also be on display with accompanying plush Murakami pieces available for viewing in the fine art cases bridging the Drawing Room and Game Room through Monday, July 31.
