The POWER Project: ‘Black and Blue’ Indigo Dye Workshop
@ Comfort Station Logan Square
2579 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60647
Opening Saturday, June 3rd, from 2PM - 5PM
Programmed by Nina Yeboah, Facilitated by Banke Abioye
Indigo is a plant of the Old World and the New. Through it, and its use as a dye, we learn the histories and cultures of Africans on the continent and in the Americas. Join us for a short lecture and dye workshop led by Banke Abioye.
The workshop will provide fabric to be dyed, but please feel free to bring any item (e.g., a t-shirt, skein of yarn, or cloth) made of natural fibers (such as cotton, wool, ramie, silk, angora, alpaca, etc.) that you’d like to dye. Please wear clothes you don’t mind being stained and comfortable shoes (for a short walk around Comfort Station). This workshop is intended for adults and youth ages 15+.
**Workshop Fee: $10 – 25. This is a ticketed event. Please secure your spot through ticketleap: https://powerproject.ticketleap.com/indigo**
About our facilitator:
Banke Abioye is an educator, environmentalist, and crafter. She has spent time traveling around the country learning about natural dyes, basket weaving, and ceramics. Banke uses locally foraged materials, such as Black Walnut, Coreopsis, and Dandelions in her natural dye craft. Banke is eager to explore and share her natural dye craft with others. Originally from Oakland, CA, she’s lived in Chicago for nearly a decade.
About The P.O.W.E.R. Project:
The P.O.W.E.R. Project is a programming partnership between Comfort Station and the Art Leaders of Color Network (ALCN). Throughout the month of June, the project will host a series of lectures, workshops, self-care exercises, and more in the aim of creating an ‘empowerment hub’ where people inspire each other to engage in a multitude of social justice practices.
**Donations collected at each P.O.W.E.R. event, will go toward the P.O.W.E.R. Grant, a fund for participating artists with projects in alignment with the P.O.W.E.R. Project’s vision.**
