Artist Statement by Jong-un Choi:
While I randomly walk down the street, I venture out in search of some movements between visible objects through reflections in which I see buildings, signs, lights, cars, and trees. My view continuously changes by way of the reflected images in mirrors and windows and they captivate my perception. I gradually gaze into glossy surfaces and my attention finally brings the objects into focus. Then I take up the reflected images in which there are indirectly recognizable objects, and I start forming my own aesthetic composition.
In the Selective Consciousness series, space consists of binary parts: the reflected image realistically depicted, and the surrounding space of the reflected image shown in solid color. The consciousness of reflected surfaces represents my own engagement in the urban vistas where I currently live and work. The physically reflected imagery indicates engagement of a specific perspective as I gaze, and therefore embodies illusion and internal perception.
Great collaboration with a visual artist, Jong-un Choi and a retail space, Essentia Chicago. Please come to the reception and see the art!
