Mana Artist in Residence, Mocrep, will present their second collaboration with Neele Hülcker, Berlin based composer, performer, and activist. Taking human-dog relationships as a starting point, this multimedia performance will use movement and music to explore communication and intimacy with the non-human.
This project is supported by the Goethe-Institut Chicago and Mana Contemporary Chicago.
About Mocrep
Mocrep is a Chicago-based ensemble dedicated to performing radical, 21st-century music that engages with contemporary culture — aesthetically, socially, and politically. Mocrep specializes in works that not only synthesize music, theater, and performance art, but also work that productively embraces the differences between these mediums. In this way, Mocrep hopes to expose and explore new possibilities in contemporary performance.
Comprised of eleven performers, the group’s practice reflects the idea of music as a medium, the meaning of performance as a social relationship, and the potential for art to serve as a catalyst for change. Mocrep constantly pushes to address political, social, and cultural questions, and aims to create spaces for audiences to do the same. Collaboration is a central part of the practice — both between composers and performers and across artistic disciplines.
About Neele Hülcker
Neele Hülcker is a composer-performer whose work focuses on music as anthropological research in everyday-life environments. Their compositions manifest through performance-installations, intuitive actions and interventions, in experimental public spaces. Their compositions have been performed at Wittener Tage für neue Kammermusik, Wien Modern, London Contemporary Music Festival, Münchener Biennale, Blurred Edges Festival (Hamburg), Frontiers Festival(Birmingham), soundacts festival (Athens), Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik Darmstadt, Klangwerkstatt Berlin, and elsewhere.
