Cassie Tompkins: It’s Just Color
@ Comfort Station Logan Square
2579 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60647
Opening Saturday, April 1st, from 2PM - 5PM
On view through Saturday, April 29th
It’s Just Color is an exhibition of screen-printed and dyed fabric monoprints of imagined environments capturing the tableau of everyday phenomena. Using a language of geometric and organic shapes and the sensorial experience of color, Tompkins works as an improviser, balancing compositions through intentional and serendipitous marks. Through the demonstration of opposites, she fuses elements found in design and abstract painting. This process employs both industrial and traditional craft techniques that magnify the beautiful and the grotesque. Her work is grounded on philosophical notions found in quotidian life. Moments that blur boundaries between material objects and cognitive experiences, encourage viewers to reconsider their own surroundings through material and designed transformations.
Cassie Tompkins was born in 1979 and grew up in the small farm and factory town of Sterling, Illinois. In 2001 she graduated with a BFA in photography from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design and in 2010 received a BFA with a concentration in visual communication design from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has worked with many different mediums, including photography and printmaking, almost always exploring light, pattern, color, and the little bits of beauty that are found within any environment. Cassie currently works as part of the Design team at the Art Institute of Chicago, is a freelance designer for Illinois Humanities, and is a FIELD/WORK resident at the Chicago Artist Coalition.
