“My sculptural work [in The Beginning and End of things.] explores the composition of our contemporary environment through points of intersection between organic nature and the formulated landscapes of civilization. The natural characteristics of water, trees and earth are observed through experimental interactions with concrete, metal, carbon and other fabricated objects. Through conversion of these material, the understanding of formulated nature is further questioned with sense of place and time.” – Sae Jun Kim
Korean born artist Sae Jun Kim creates sculptural installation that embody his fascination with the points of intersection between nature and the controlled, manufactured landscape of civilization. Kim’s work utilizes concrete, metal and other industrial materials. The sculptures are either installed within specific natural settings, or presented independently. His work has been included in several exhibitions throughout the Chicago area, including Evanston Art Center. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and is a recipient of the Shaping the Future award bestowed by the Remet corporation. Sae Jun Kim currently lives and works in Chicago, Illinois where he is a co-founder and resident artist of Fat City: an artist commune, residency and gallery.
