Poetry Reading: Maria Barnas with opening by Danielle Rosen

The poets will be reading in response to the current exhibition on view, Viviane Sassen: UMBRA.
Maria Barnas is a Dutch writer, poet and artist whose work centers on the myriad ways description can shape reality. Barnas wrote a series of poems to accompany UMBRA, which she will recite during this event. Barnas studied at the Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam and in 2008, she was presented with the Cees Buddingh Prize for her first collection of poetry Twee Zonnen (2003). In 2014, she was awarded the Anna Bijn prize for her collection of poems titled Jaja de oerknal (2013).
Danielle Rosen is an interdisciplinary artist living in Chicago, IL. She received her B.F.A. from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and her M.F.A. from the University of Chicago. In 2013, Rosen taught On Images at the University of Chicago as a post-MFA teaching fellow. In 2011, Rescue Press published her book of pseudo-scientific research and performative documentation titled The Institute for Species Systemization: An Experimental Archive under her performative platform: Patricia Rose. In 2014, Rosen submitted 26 volumes of an artist book entitled An Encyclopedia, to Special Collections at the University of Chicago and 10 volumes to the Douglas Fine Print Collection at the Denver Public Library. Rosen continues to exhibit nationally and internationally. Currently, she is working on a series of photographs, sculptures, and performative texts that continue her problematization of human cultural representations of non-human animals.
