Feb 19th 2017

Is looking around you a little overwhelming these days? Maybe it’s time to turn that gaze inward. Swing by Hume from 6-9 for an evening of Tarot with Alia Ra’naa Walston and Natal Chart readings by Ashley Ray. The event will take place in artist Fontaine Capel’s installation “Por La Mañana”; cafecitos will be available.

Tarot Readings: $5-$10 donation
Born and raised in Chicago, Alia Ra’naa Walston’s fascination with investigating the psyche through in-depth study of the stars and planets was influenced by her vegan sci-fi and occult obsessed father. Her interests in astrology, art history, and archetypes eventually led her to develop a focus on tarot, which she has been practicing for two years. She focuses on providing advice on developing practical healthy habits through encouraging a deep examination of the soul and the symbolic cycles life, death, and resurrection. She is also one half of @twoyoungcrones, a tarot-based spiritual project she runs with Grace Deveney.

“Por la Mañana” by Fontaine Capel

The preparation of cafecitos—diminutive cups of stovetop espresso— is a time-honored Cuban ritual. This screwing, unscrewing, piling, scooping, and stirring is the first action of the day, and is performed as an act of familial love.

In Por La Mañana: a Community Café, Cuban-American artist Fontaine Capel will transform the storefront gallery she co-founded—Hume Chicago—into a domestic space. The installation borrows visual elements from her grandparents’ Brooklyn apartment which, after nearly fifty years of her family’s continuous residence, is now being converted into luxury apartments.

Neighbors in rapidly gentrifying Logan Square will be welcomed into the space with bilingual signage, hot cafecitos, and the opportunity to sit around the kitchen table and talk with their neighbors.
