“Numerous women have paved the paths before us. Women that have challenged society and persisted in changing standards and expectations so we may discover our true identities. Inspired by their ability to conjointly pay homage to cultural traditions while establishing independence, this exhibition explores the roles ancestry, migration, and politics play in developing new generations.” – Sam

Sam Kirk is a multidisciplinary artist with studios in Chicago and Brooklyn, explores culture, identity and urban politics through her art. Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, Kirk is the product of a working class family. Her upbringing largely contributes to the inspirait on behind her work. A love and passionate focus on community and culture, Sam celebrates the day to day that is found in local neighborhoods and “ordinary” people. Taking experiences from her own upbringing and merging them with insights obtained during travel, her work is known for its vibrant color palette, whimsical characters and, profound stories laced with optimism.

As part of her exhibition, she will celebrate her Latin roots with a pubic mural on the exterior walls of Pilsen Outpost.
