GirlBand
@ The Lorna Room
1523 w Morse Ave, Chicago, IL 60626
Opening Friday, October 7th, from 7PM - 10PM
It has been 25 years since Shirley Kaneda wrote “Painting and Its Others, The Feminine in Abstract Painting” and proposed abstract painting(s) could be masculine or feminine, regardless of gender. This show features the artwork of 7 female artists whose work has run adjacent to terms like feminine and abstract and painting, though often their work was none of those things (and other times just some of them). Many of these ladies would not self identify as a “female abstract painter” yet the idea of GirlBand is rooted in those very three words because those words have been used to describe them. In reality, the difficulty to label these artists and what they are making is the undercurrent connecting them here.
What do we think about these labels now? Do these females make feminine paintings? Are there even any abstract paintings in this show? How can we compare female artists? Do we care?
What do we know, we are just girls in a band.
