DOUBLE EXPOSURE: Calum Walter and Nellie Kluz
@ Roots & Culture
1034 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60642
Opening Sunday, October 9th, from 7:30 PM - 9:30PM
Roots & Culture is excited to present another “Double Exposure” screening in which two moving image artists are programmed together in an effort to blend audiences and stimulate new conversations. Chicago-based artists Calum Walter and Nellie Kluz both observe the world, culling images from the commonalities and peculiarities of daily life. Kluz’s work falls more into the non-fiction arena, bordering on what we might call documentary, as she enters locations, events, and communities to watch and collect “social dynamics and small pleasures”. Walter’s pieces also start with observation, but he tends to pull the images in closer to the self and plays with the process of perception through various forms of abstraction. Their works remind us to pay attention to gesture and habit and contemplate the human rituals and activities that highlight elements, environments, and process.
The screening will include a mix of new work and films that have traveled widely to film festivals. You can find out more about the artists at: Nelliekluz.com & calumwalter.com
Calum Walter is a filmmaker, artist and sound designer. He has a BFA from the University of Colorado where he studied filmmaking with an emphasis on sound, and later received a MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He continues to do sound design and recording for his own films, and has collaborated with numerous artists as cinematographer, sound recordist and designer. His work has screened widely at places including New York Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Rotterdam International Film Festival, FIC Valdivia, Ann Arbor Film Festival, the Klub Katarakt Experimental Music Festival and the Big Ears Music Festival.
Nellie Kluz likes making observational, non-fiction videos about visual processes, social dynamics and small pleasures. Her movies have screened at venues like the Full Frame Film Festival, Festival de Popoli in Florence, the Chicago Underground Film Festival, Camden International Film Festival, the Independent Film Festival Boston, the Maryland Film Festival, and Rooftop Films.
