Opening Friday, September 9th, from 6PM - 9PM
On view through Sunday, October 23rd
Gallery19 and interior designer Nicholas Roarike Moriarty conspire to commit “The Perfect Crime,” an exhibition daring to challenge the prevailing laws of interior design with audacious compilations of contemporary art and furniture, curated by Mr. Moriarty. Gallery19’s location will become a series of interior vignettes, serving as a visual tutorial–a DIY–for integrating the works of Gallery19 artists with furniture from many of Chicago’s most daring home furnishing designers, while violating every design law you ever thought you knew. Artists and furniture designers will be present to discuss their creative processes and innovations.
Moriarty, a rising star in Chicago’s interior design world, established his business, NMI, in 2008, after graduating from the Harrington College of Design. His reputation for coaxing divergent styles into harmonious agreement make him a sought-after talent, whose clients respect his ingenuity and capability. A Victorian gray stone will not be spared a minimalist makeover, if that’s what best defines the unique qualities of the home and the objectives of its owners. Nor will a room ever be held prisoner to traditional color theory or art placement. And, if that perfect piece of furniture can’t be found, Moriarty will design it himself. When executing his ideas, prevailing wisdom for Moriarty comes from Le Corbusier, “Good design is intelligence made visible.”
Moriarty’s experience in the design community enables him to bring together the most creative minds in the fields of art, furniture, and functional objects. “The Perfect Crime” will feature the highly coveted ceramics of artist Doug Reyes, whose exquisite one-of-a kind vessels are prized by Chicago collectors. In addition, photographer Roger Boulay will premier his newest “library of books,” oversized photographic images representing the grandeur and the decay of western literary tradition. Further challenging the status quo, Moriarty will include the broad shouldered sophistication of furniture designers Aaron Pahmier and Bladon Connor, aka Aaron Bladon. Also, expect to see Steven Haulenbeek, whose furniture conveys aesthetic simplicity through manipulation of unexpected materials. TJ O’Keefe’s astonishing light objects and Casey Lurie folding lamps will illuminate the space. And, of course, Moriarty will rely upon Oscar Isberian to provide stand-out flooring options so unique they will have you looking at floor decor in a whole new way.
Some would say it’s criminal to congregate so much exceptional talent in the same place and time and expect each to receive their due. Gallery19 owner Dietrich Klevorn says, “It’s actually the perfect crime. Nicholas will present the aforementioned artists and designers with the authority of one who has done this many times before, and it always works.” But don’t take her word for it, see the exhibition for yourself.
Opening reception for “The Perfect Crime” is Friday, September 9, 6-9pm, with an artists’ talk at 7pm. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served. Other contributing makers include:Lagomorph Designs, AKMD (Ayush Kasliwal & Michael W. Dreeben)
“The Perfect Crime” opens September 9, 6-9pm. Exhibition runs through October 23, 2016. Gallery19 at 4839 N. Damen Ave. 773-420-8071.
