Stephen Lapthisophon is a multimedia artist and educator whose work explores the realms of conceptual art, critical theory, and disability studies. Heavily influenced by The Situationists, a group of international artists who made everyday life their artistic activity, Lapthisophon incorporates this same approach into his own practice. As a man who is blind he also seeks to rethink the emphasis of sight in art and aesthetic culture, creating works that rely in some part on our other senses. Utilizing mediums and materials as varied as video, poetry, sounds, coffee grounds, and even pigmented animal fats he addresses questions of language, history, and cultural memory.
He received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his BFA from University of Texas at Austin. In 2008 the Wynn Newhouse award for artists with disabilities was presented to Lapthisophon for his contributions to the artistic world.
