To celebrate the unveiling of Wolf Vostell’s colossal work, “Concrete Traffic” (1970), originally commissioned by the MCA in 1970 and subsequently donated to the University of Chicago, a backdrop of classic Cadillacs and cement trucks set the stage for a discussion between James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator Michael Darling and Department Chair and Professor of Art History at the University of Chicago Christine Mehring on Vostell’s work. The conversation is followed by a procession, which traces the work’s history as a public work of art before arriving at its new location in the University of Chicago’s Campus North Parking Garage.

This procession is the inaugural program for Concrete Happenings, a collaborative series of public exhibitions, screenings, symposia, and other programs that mark the return of “Concrete Traffic” to public view at the University of Chicago following a major conservation effort.
